As a principal musician in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, Wu Man has performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia with the Silk Road Ensemble, an international musical collective of artists interested in exploring the relationship between tradition and innovation in music from the East and West. The Silk Road Ensemble brings together various instruments from the Silk Road region, including the Chinese pipa, Armenian duduk, Japanese shakuhachi, Mongolian morin khuur, among many others, with string and percussion. Wu Man has been featured with the Silk Road Ensemble on numerous recordings including the Grammy nominated album Off the Map, Silk Road Journeys: When Strangers Meet, Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon, and New Impossibilities, as well as the films The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble and A Playlist Without Borders/Live from Tanglewood.
